Building a Sustainable Environment

The construction industry is responsible for nearly 60% of all the energy consumed by the UK each year as well as over 50% of the CO2 emissions.

It also directly produces over a third of all waste produced in the UK each year, 13 million tonnes of which are unused!

As a major player in the recruitment of workers for this particular sector, SkyBlue’s business has inevitably had an impact on the quality of people’s lives.

In recognition of this impact SkyBlue actively encourages its team of 100 staff and nearly 2000 associates to take part in a variety of sustainability activities.

SkyBlue people haven’t been backwards in coming forwards and have already completed a number of projects, most notably during ‘Sustainability Week’ – a seven day campaign set up by Carillion to increase awareness and understanding of the issues throughout the group.

A team of 12 from Carillion, SkyBlue and AG Plant took time out to create a new sensory garden for Katherine House Hospice, a cancer charity in Stafford.

St Paul’s Primary School in West Derby also benefited from a playground extension following a two-week sustainability project, which was carried out by a team of eight from SkyBlue, Carillion, Eve Trackway and Shovlin.

“Social and corporate responsibility extends to everything a business produces, how it buys and sells, how it affects the environment, how it respects the rights of people and invests in the community,” explained Richard Toy, Head of Operations at SkyBlue.

“There’s no doubt that the teams activities have helped to and will continue to increase awareness of the issues, as well as to demonstrate our corporate commitment to sustainability.”

"We hope that 2005 will be just as successful and that SkyBlue people will lend their support whether it be by setting up community projects, working with local wildlife trusts, organising recycling schemes or perhaps sponsoring local ativities."
