SkyBlue Goes Back to School

A team from SkyBlue's Covent Garden branch swapped a stuffy day in the office for overalls and paintbrushes, as part of the London Cares Education Action Day - 17th June.

The 13 strong team, including helpers from three other local businesses, descended on The Alton Primary School in Putney to deliver a complimentary makeover that would make ‘Ground Force’ proud, including re-painting fences, planting up flower pots and giving the courtyard garden, which is used for teaching and relaxing, a facelift.

The London Cares scheme is the city’s largest volunteer business day, organised by Business in the Community, with over 2,000 volunteers taking part from across London.

Part of Carillion plc, SkyBlue got its hands dirty to demonstrate the business’s commitment to giving something back to the community.

“We wanted to become a part of the event,” says the schools deputy headmaster, Stephan Cook, “because it has been proven that the physical environment in which children are educated has a significant impact on their ability to learn.

“SkyBlue has done a fantastic job and the children are really enjoying and benefitting from the improved outside spaces at the school.

“We’re also very grateful to SkyBlue for rallying support from local businesses, Rail Drainage, Euro Earthworks and Hasmead. They have kindly donated all materials needed to carry out the work.”

SkyBlue branch manager, Scott Siwicki added: “We’re always looking for ways of impacting positively within the community and this project seemed like the perfect opportunity.

"This is hopefully the start of a more long term relationship with the school. We're in talks with them to deliver regular 'job' presentations to the children as well as question and anser sessions, which aim to provide a platform for improving the children's spoken English."
