Target Zero

An uncompromising approach to health and safety has prompted the Carillion group to launch ‘Target Zero’ – a tough new initiative, which aims to eradicate accidents in the workplace.

Specialising in recruiting workers for traditionally high-risk sectors including Rail and Construction, SkyBlue has welcomed the initiative with open arms, as Head of Operations, Richard Toy explains:

“At SkyBlue there is no such thing as an acceptable level of accidents: even one injury is too many.

“Our people work on roads and railways, in construction and other inherently dangerous situations, which means that ‘Target Zero’ is vitally important in creating a safer working environment.”

This major new campaign aims to create a culture of zero tolerance to accidents in the workplace across the entire Carillion group.

“’Target Zero’ has a simple vision,” says Richard.

“Through the way we work and behave, all our people and stakeholders will be protected from the risks of occupational injury or ill-health.

“We’ve employed four stages to help us achieve this aim; Awareness, Competence, Compliance and Excellence.”

‘Target Zero’ was launched with every single employee getting together with his/her line manager to discuss health and safety issues in their own workplace and to receive a copy of the new health and safety booklet and a ‘Don’t Walk By’ report card, containing a ten point safety plan.

“Under ‘Target Zero’, every individual at SkyBlue and across the entire Carillion group has a responsibility for health and safety,” adds Richard.

“Every one of us is working to stamp out unsafe practices, such as ignoring correct procedures, cutting corners on personal protection or taking unnecessary risks. If it’s not safe, we don’t do it!

If you see someone putting themselves or others in danger, stop the work immediately and reassess the risk. Either sort the problem out yourself or raise the alarm and get help."
