Laying the foundations for a fully competent workforce

 

SkyBlue is doing its bit to ensure construction workers meet industry standards.

The company is currently offering experienced construction workers on its books, the opportunity to fast track to an NVQ, level 2 qualification.

Candidates able to demonstrate they already have the required skills in their trade, that they want to obtain their CSCS card quickly and easily and have passed the CITB health and safety test, can take part in a one-day skill testing assessment at any number of locations across the country, with the help of Carillion Construction Training.

“We’ve only just started the scheme but already the response from our construction workers has been favourable. With thousands of eligible construction operatives currently working for SkyBlue, we have huge potential to enhance the industry as a whole.

“It usually takes three months to achieve an NVQ but we can now do this in just one day. As well as helping to ensure a safe and fully competent workforce, we’re able to keep track of a traditionally transient workforce.”

Trades suitable for consideration include trowel occupations (brickplayers), wood occupations (joiners) and general construction operatives (ground-workers). Each however must be over 21 years of age and possess a minimum of fiver years’ occupational experience.

“These criteria are to ensure we get suitable candidates through the course. There’s no point wasting our time and theirs putting anyone and everyone on the course, only to have high failure rates,” adds Mr Campbell.

"It's not about seeing how many people we can get on the course, it's about quality and helping the industry to raise the bar."
