Equality Bill

The Equality Act 2010 is an Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom and fulfils a manifesto commitment of the Labour Party in the 2005 General Election.

The primary purpose of the Act is to codify the complicated and numerous array of Acts and Regulations, which formed the basis of anti-discrimination law in the United Kingdom. This was, primarily, the Equal Pay Act 1970, the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, the Race Relations Act 1976, the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and three major statutory instruments protecting discrimination in employment on grounds of religion or belief, sexual orientation and age.

It is intended that the provisions in the Act will come into force by the latest of 2013.

At SkyBlue we recognised the importance of this new legislation so we have constructed a glossary of terms for the New Equality Bill. The document will hopefully provide clarification on your organisations' stance with regards the new act.

"One of the biggest challenges facing the UK today - diversity is about celebrating individuality. It is much more than just a new word for equality. A diverse approach will help us to recognise value and manage differences and enable everyone to realise their full potential. Diversity challenges us to applaud people from all walks of life and not to discriminate on any basis" -

Dave Massingham - Equality and Diversity Manager SkyBlue Solutions
